QuickBooks Error h505 occurs when you are trying to open a company file on another computer that does not have the proper establishment of setup or your computer needs some additional setup or installation. H series error is associated with hosting settings problems. This error appears when a user is trying to open a company file in a multi-user environment. When error h505 encounters then an error message pops up stating “Quickbooks has faced a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience.”


Causes of QuickBooks Error h505

  • When the .nd file is missed, damaged, or incorrect.

  • When the DNS setting is incorrect.

  • When settings of hosting configuration are improper or incorrect.

  • When the QuickBooksDBXX service is not working.

  • When QuickBooks is not able to track the IP address of the computer.

  • When QuickBooks files or folders are not able to scan with the database server.

  • When a firewall blocks the incoming and outgoing communication to the company file, then Quickbooks error h505 occurs.

  • When you are trying to open a company file that is stored in another system.

Methods to solve QuickBooks Error h505:-

  • Editing the host file

  • Open the run dialogue box by pressing the Windows+R key then you have to open command mode by typing CMD and pressing enter.

  • Now in the command prompt write “ipconfig/all” and press enter to run this command.

  • Now you have to note down the hostname and IP address somewhere because you are required to repeat the same process for all the computers which have a multi-user setup.


  • Now edit the Windows host file

  • The first step is to shut down the QuickBooks and go to the start menu then go to This pc and make sure that you are at the following location: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc or C:\Windows\Syswow64\Drivers\Etc.


  • If you are not able to see the Windows folder on This Pc then follow the steps to unhide the folder.

  • Now go to the view tab option and then click on hidden items. Now you will see the hidden folders.

  • Now right-click on the host file and select the option open with and open it with notepad.

  • Fill in the IP address and computer name and please use the tab key to put the spaces don't use a space bar when you fill in the details of the IP address and computer name.

  • The last step is to save the changes and reopen the QuickBooks in multi-user mode.
